Simply Thai
We've all been yearning for some good Thai food to dig in to. I'm not saying Soi is the answer to all our prayers. However, this new delivery place is a notable contestant that is certainly worth a mention. At the moment Soi has a fairly basic menu, so don't go asking for a whole steamed lime-chili sea bass and embarrass yourselves! They have a good balance of vegetarian and non-vegetarian (chicken and prawns), so everyone is happy. What I would like to see is a little more dedication to their rice and noodle section. I'd love to see those boring "stir fried yellow noodles" replaced with some delicious pad see ew! Mmmm mmmm.
The kind of Thai Soi delivers is simple, homey and on the lighter side which may not make it at a royal Thai banquet but makes for a great on-the-couch-comfort-tuck-in!
I actually wanted to order once more before writing this just to have a better gage on their consistency but oh well. Do share anything different you might have tried.
A breakdown of our meal:
- Krapao Kai - Stir Fried Chicken w/ Basil - This was the best dish out of our three. Not heavy, like a good krapao would be in the streets of Bangkok. It was alive with that wonderful sweet, liquorice-y, peppery, flavour of basil. Probably my favourite herb, I love the versatility of it, stir fry, pesto or just as-is in a salad, it always tastes delicious. It's a sassy little herb that is by no means subtle and demands center stage in your mouth. You got to love that!
- Stir Fried Chicken w/ Cashew Nuts - This was one of their recommendations. We weren't in the mood for curry, even though I feel this review is incomplete now without one! Clean, simple flavours. The sauce was essentially oyster sauce with an added smokiness that came from the green peppers. Though the cashews had gotten quite soggy, what's nice about that is at the end you have some yummy oyster sauce infused cashews! I may come back to this dish, but for next time this is the dish I will swap for my curry.
- Pad Thai - W/ Tofu and Egg - It certainly wasn't love at first bite but it did eventually grow on me. The flavours were a little muted. The sweet and sour were a bit lacking from the holy tetralogy of thai cooking - that is sweet, sour, salty, spicy! The egg was much-to-much with fat chunks of scrambled blobs. What made it seem even eggier was the use of soft tofu, I was hoping for firmer bits of fried tofu when I ordered it, but now I know. Again it's simple, like something you'd whip up at home but maybe can't be bothered to. I would order it again with less egg this time. Here's a little tip: Tastes great combined with the chicken krapao!
I can't wait to try the fish cakes, corn cakes, salads and curries. As long as you keep in mind that this is simple no-frills Thai I'm sure you'll be content.
